javon ft. @ #southsideopenmic

Javon is a software developer by trade and a poet by heart. A proud graduate of NC A&T (yes that band from “Drumline” -_-), he moved to McKinney, TX shortly after graduating. College is where he first started performing outside of his church. While in school he took as many writing and poetry classes as his tech filled schedule would allow. He was also able to spit and compete in cities all over North Carolina as well as in DC, Tennessee, and Atlanta. His very first poem was written at the age of thirteen when his youth minister forced him to write one for his church. Before poetry, he wrote rap lyrics and short stories; continuously trying to find a way to provide advice, hope, and encouragement in a way he thought others would find more creative than lecturing. His first feature performance in the DFW area was @ South Side Open Mic – Community Voice about a year ago. He has since toured several cities in Texas and is a member of 2015 DallasPoetrySlam.com Team. Javon was nominated for New Up and Coming Male Artist in the 2015 North Texas Spoken Word Awards. The release of his book of erotic poetry, Fingertip Foreplay is currently pending. Don’t miss Javon and all who bless the mic this sunday night 7pm 3100 grand ave followed by the blues palace show band! $5 admission, byob (beer/wine/mixers available for purchase) for more information contact Annika Michelle 682.667.5164 xo

marcus d ft. @ #underground

If U dunno Marcus D here’s a lil background of the man and his lifework. It is evident that from early on he has been a conscious brother amidst the harsh social reality facing black men in economically disadvantaged communities. As a student at South Grand Prairie High School he worked with Montel Williams to establish the campus Black Student Organization. Shortly thereafter he had a pivotal role in the foundation of the Dalworth Citizen Community Review Board. He found notoriety when he became a rapper with the Hip Hop Gangstaz and has been on tour opening for such artists as Heavy D, Bel Biv Devoe and Spice 1. One of his singles was K-104’s number one hit for an entire month just three days after it was released. He has worked in Dallas, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Miami with several major recording labels, including working as a ghost writer Knite Lite which became Death Row Records upon the partnership of Dr. Dre and Suge Knight. Partway through his career he became disenchanted with drugs and gangs so Marcus D transitioned into a gospel rapper recording with Grapetree Records and has organized nearly a dozen peace rallies. While seeking to overcome the remnants of his former lifestyle, Marcus D has spent some time incarcerated yet he continues to create music that speaks to and from the streets. He has also hosted his own four-year running radio show. No longer identifying with a particular label or genre, Marcus D now refers to his work as ‘life music’ and he is steadfast in his commitment to using his music to enlighten others to escape some of the social confines that he once experienced. Marcus D has been selected as the featured artist for the underground resurrection! don’t  miss him monday 5.11.15 7pm Club Reserved 2701 e. lancaster av fort worth, tx 76103 for more info contact Annika Michelle 682.667.5164 or see event details https://www.facebook.com/events/983039881714043

LGB ft. @ #southsideopenmic

LGB was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and legend has it, that he was raised by a family of gators. He started out as a rapper but his rap career was short lived, very short, rumor has it that he performed for a group of Voodoo Doctors and was so terrible they put a voodoo curse on him that gave him the ability to write poetry with a mixture of comedy. In 2001, LGB put his new skills to the test and became a member of the first ever New Orleans National Poetry Slam Team.
His success was repeated in 2002 and 2003 when he was a member of the New Orleans team both years and helped the 2003 team reach semifinals which was held in Chicago. He then packed up his gators and voodoo poems and moved to Dallas in 2005. In 2010 he spit voodoo at the Dallas Poetry Grand Slam and was crowned the Dallas Grand Slam City Champion and helped the team make it to the semifinals at the National Poetry Slam competition that year. In 2011, 2012 and 2013, he earned spots on the Dallas Poetry Slam team each year by being one of the top five poets in the city. In 2014 and 2015 he was crowned the Dallas Poetry Grand Slam champion once again and became a member of the team for the 6th consecutive year. Rumor has it, he celebrated by swimming in the swamps with his pet gators and performing for the voodoo doctors that cursed him in the beginning. LGB has shared the stage with many great poets, performed on many great stages and in many great cities but his greatest achievement is being able to perform for you. LGB is the featured artist @ #southsideopenmic on sunday 4.16.2015 @ rl’s blues palace 3100 grand av, dallas 7pm $5 byob this show will include some of dallas’ hottest poets on the open mic followed by the blues palace show band playing live! this is definitely the place to be sunday nights in dallas, see event information and see you there! xo http://www.facebook.com/events/1528898437363824

God’s Poet ft. @ #southsideopenmic

LaTricia “God’sPoet” Murray is a Christian, Poet, Spoken word artist and Writer. She has been writing poetry since she was 12 years old. She was born, and raised in Dallas, TX, currently residing in Wylie, TX where she is the mother of two beautiful children (a son and daughter). She has a passion for sharing her gift of poetry and God’s word, which has led her into the spoken word arena, where she is described as an anointed speaker, a difference maker, intelligent and awe-inspiring. Latricia believes that words are God-given gifts and should be used to inspire and motivate others to greatness and prayerfully a glimpse of who Christ is. Her intent is to reach the hearts and souls of any and everyone with the word of God.  The love and gospel of Jesus is her message, which she delivers through the sassiness of her down-to-earth poetic ministering. She describes her poetry as Poetic Praise.

She is truly an individual and her unique sound and style remains in a category of its own. When you hear her name, be prepared to be enlightened, encouraged and uplifted.

Hathor n Temidara ft @ #southsideopenmic

Hathor Hendrix is a dallas native who’s been performing locally for nearly a year. in addition to being an artist and lover of the arts she is also a fitness professional. it is her love of music and the opportunity to express her world that motivates her to sing, dance and other artistic expression. being able to tell and share stories of good and maybe not so good, yet and still it is her personal experiences that will hopefully, in the words of b randall, “touch, move and inspire”.

Temidara is an earthling, raised in the highland hills area of dallas. she’s been performing since the age of 14 and during the past year has returned to the stage after a ten year hiatus. she says, “I was afraid to share my thoughts in fear of rejection. But I too am Urban Poetry. One that discovers what it means to be your Authentic Self. Getting beyond ones own self created illusions. to being my true self at all times.
